What Should I Write About – Learn From My Mistakes

Last week I put together the most popular niches on WordPress. It was a revelation for me. I thought that I would be able to guess them – and I failed.

Today, I am looking into my own niches and themes just to see what actually resonated the most with my audience over the years. Well, I was almost always interested in health and food. When I started the blog – it was a golden era of blogging when the main purpose of blogging was sharing your own experiences and advice based on those. So I shared anything that worked for me in the hope that there is someone somewhere who will be helped. Those posts got very few views and they did not make it to my top 3.

Another type of post was sharing posts – I have shared my mum’s journey, her struggle with breast cancer, and her victory. Yes, it was more for me than for anyone else. I was thinking about deleting those, especially when I learned about the EAT policy of Google. I knew that those posts would be hardly seen. And they were.

The last type of posts got the most response. And those were about my struggle to leave wage slavery and to become a solopreneur (or simply a one-person business). Not necessarily a millionaire but a person who is in charge of his own time, a person without a boss, the person who does what he loves and is interested in, the person who retires early, travels the world, enjoys time with his family, has enough time for friends, can play with pets endlessly, can spend whole just reading…utopia right? Well, those posts got the most views and likes. So there are more people like me! Great 🙂 Let’s dream together, no, better than that – let’s get there together!

  1. Most likes received: Keeping Everything in One Place (themes: long-term goal setting for a one-person business, platforms, social media, self-growth)
  2. Second place goes to: Q4, the moment of truth. I think this is one of my weakest posts but the title is catchy and people are always curious – how much did you earn and how you did that. If you can share that, I am sure, you can drive more traffic purely based on this. (themes: earnings, Q4)
  3. Last but not least: Where to put your energy. This one is an interesting one. The title is very vague. It can be anything right? In terms of the content, I regard this one to be a better one. It has some research and data, not just my opinions or feelings. It shows me that quality is better than just a lazy post. (themes: large selling platforms for small business, print on demand, Etsy)
  4. and a consolation prize: Provide value and you will be rewarded. I could not help myself and include this 🙂 It is a very short post, more emotional than other posts. Reassuring myself that what I believe in is actually true. It did resonate with others and I am happy about it. This is what I believe social media should be also about – resonating, supporting each other, and upholding values. Yes, I am preachy sometimes…(themes: sharing emotions, feelings and hopes with others, moral values, vulnerability, resonating with others)

So, to conclude this post. The themes that interest me most and I think are helpful, did not gain any traction in the long run. The themes that were more about what I do, backed with some data and emotions, resonated the most.

I would say if something is working for you – double down on that. That is what I am doing from now on and you can catch up with me in another three years to see, whether it worked for me or not 🙂

Have a great summer, dear friends, and don’t give up!

And to add to this a little side note. I do not like to bother people with my e-mails but there was a time when WordPress would send out emails every time you posted something. From the image below you can see what topic was most liked by my readers.

Questions I am trying to solve: Can a "one-person business" survive? Does it have a chance in today's world? Is it sustainable for more than a few years? Is it something that can work long-term? In my blog, I am mainly creating lists with tips on how to avoid numerous burnouts while working full-time (and hoping to retire early hahaha).

  1. I wrote several long reads and link them frequently. Just like you, almost nobody read or liked these when I posted them originally. But two of the long posts are my top posts of all time now. It’s hard to guess what will be picked up and what will not be.

    1. Yes, it happened to me. Older posts suddenly picked up – but not the posts I thought they were my best. I am still learning even after so many years! Lets keep on going 🙂

      1. Well, I’ve accepted that I’m writing for myself so it won’t matter all that much if anyone reads me 🙂 But I enjoy comments a lot 😀

      2. You made me laugh. Yes, it is my case as well. I have started blogging because I wanted to share what worked me. I feel that I owe it to this blog and I carry on even though it did not work out. I can still be very honest here and some of the posts are like a diary for me. It is fun to look back. Anyways, internet is always changing so we will see if we get discovered more in future 🙂

  2. I love this! It’s always a bit of a surprise when an old post picks up! I must say I do miss that golden era of blogging. The old WordPress site I started 10 years ago wouldn’t have gotten any traction today, everything has to be so much more “in its own lane” now.

    1. Thank you for such a great comment! It is nice to know that I am not the only one who is missing the old style of blogging. I am keeping this mini blog only because I have some loyal friends reading it. Wishing you all the best on your adventures 🙂
