Are frenemies good for you?

To put it bluntly and to save you some time – the answer is: “No!”

I know that people are often scared about what will the others think. In this time and age everyone knows about everyone, right? But do you really have to waste any energy even thinking about this? Yes, there will always be people, who will not want you to succeed, who will try to laugh at you or who will try to ridicule what you do. So what? No, really – SO WHAT? I wrote about this in my post on toxic people some time ago.

Think about it the other way round. If someone goes all the way to find out the details about what you are doing instead of doing something constructive for themselves – isn’t there something sad about it? What really happened to their dignity that they have to belittle others to build their self-worth? O.K., they might find temporary satisfaction from learning about your struggles or they might have someone chiming in. But you don’t need to care, you are too busy with your own business, right? Rather than wasting time on toxic people on social media – work on your new project. That is what will pay off.

I did have this kind of conversation with someone recently and it even happened to me. I admit that I am always surprised that people need to do that. But remember. You are building something for yourself, that is build purely on your own effort, knowledge and ability. No one can tear it down just by words that are often empty and without substance. Don’t pay attention to what your frenemies are doing or saying – and keep on going my friends πŸ™‚

Questions I am trying to solve: Can a "one-person business" survive? Does it have a chance in today's world? Is it sustainable for more than a few years? Is it something that can work long-term? In my blog, I am mainly creating lists with tips on how to avoid numerous burnouts while working full-time (and hoping to retire early hahaha).

  1. Just reading your introduction. Even in today’s world ‘one person business’ can and does survive. Sometimes even touching new heights. I know of many authors, doctors, motivational speakers and even publishers for that matter who are alone. True, not many actually reach such great heights as corporates, but you have to create a niche for yourself.
I too am going to be a one an business the day I retire from my present job😊
I do thank you for such a thought provoking question. I had never focused on this aspect at all.

  2. I love how you said: “If someone goes all the way to find out the details about what you are doing instead of doing something constructive for themselves – isn’t there something sad about it?” This is SO true. I’ve learned recently that someone close to me resents all the work I’ve put into writing and myself and they stalk people online to find out what they’re up to rather than investing in bettering their own life. It’s sad when you realize someone who was very close to you is doing stuff like this, but it’s good when you do recognize it and set boundaries to distance yourself from them.

    1. Sara, thank you so much for sharing! I can relate. I kept on coming back to this topic and thinking: “Why people do this?” I wanted them to be so much better. The way I have seen them. It is always a disappointment, I know. Now, I just try to say to myself – they just don’t know otherwise. Something happened to them that they have to be this way. It is their life journey and they are learnig about life this way…Please don’t waste any energy, including emotions on them and keep on going strong! Wishing you all the best πŸ™‚
